Massage Therapy - Why Does it Help?
We all know a great massage can really help one relax, and sure
feels good (with the right therapist), but what else does it do
and why? According to Sarah Kleins' article titled Massage Benefits:
9 Healthy Reasons to Make an Appointment, studies reveal additional
ways massage helps improve health and overall well-being.
- Stress and Anxiety: Massage therapy reduces
cortisol, a hormone released as part of the body's stress response,
which subsequently reduces anxiety and stress levels.
- Depression: By increasing the serotonin and
dopamine levels, massage therapy can help to diminish symptoms
of depression.
- Pain relief: According to a 2011 study, people
suffering from chronic pain receiving massage therapy showed significantly
improved functioning as well as decreased pain levels.
- Improve Sleep: For those with sleep trouble,
massage can improve delta waves, the waves essential to receive
the deep sleep the body needs to feel rested.
- Strengthen Immunity: A 2010 study showed that
massage therapy may increase white blood cells which are the main
cells of the immune system that help the body to fight off infection
and disease.
- Circulation: Massage increases blood flow
in the body, which helps the muscles and organs receive the nutrients
they need for optimal functioning. Increased circulation also
increases drainage of the lymph system, helping rid the body of
waste and toxins.
- Alertness, Concentration: Massage has been
shown to boost brain power and help improve mental clarity.
- Headaches: Headache pain can be significantly
decreased by massage. Studies have shown it can greatly reduce
the pain and severity of migraines and other types of headaches.
